FAQ

How much does it cost?
Please visit my Rates and Policies page for more information.
How long and how often are the lessons?
I teach weekly, 30 minute lessons. Occasionally if a student is interested in a longer lesson I am able to offer 45 minute lessons. I do not recommend having a lesson every other week, it tends to hinder progress with such a long break between lessons.
Do you teach in person lessons or digital lessons?
The short answer is YES! The longer answer is that in response to the pandemic, I switched my studio to 100% online. I am now transitioning back to in-person lessons, but remain able to do online lessons based on the preference of the student.
Where do I get the materials?
There are two ways I do this: either I buy the books and the student reimburses me for them, or I send links via email so you can order the correct books.
How do I know if my kid is ready for piano?
Your child needs to be able to be fairly focused for a 30 minute lesson. We will do different activities to help them engage in different ways. They do not need to be able to read, though it is helpful! Usually my recommended starting age for piano is 5 (or when starting kindergarten).
Am I too old for piano lessons?
Of course not! That being said, be honest with yourself. If you don’t think you’ll be able to practice regularly (5 days per week for 20-30 minutes), it may be more frustrating than rewarding.
How often should I (or my kid) be practicing?
Frequency is more important than duration. I tell all my students to aim for 5 times per week. For beginning students, 5-10 minutes is probably enough for each practice session as your songs will be very short. More advanced students may need 20-30 minutes or more to get through all their material with meaningful practice.
How do I know what to practice?
I always provide feedback for my students with their assignment for the week by sending an email through my teaching management website post-lesson with the assignment.
Do you offer any recitals or other performing opportunities?
Due to the pandemic, I am not doing any recitals at this time. I hope to be able to resume having a spring recital next year!
Do you teach any other instruments?
I also teach voice lessons! I only accept students in junior high and older for voice lessons. This is because children’s voices change, and young singers should really just focus on their joy of singing! My exception to this is if a younger student is preparing for a specific event (an audition for a musical, singing a solo at church, etc).
What is your music teaching background?
I have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music education from Roberts Wesleyan College. I have taught in public and private schools over the years, and have taught piano and voice lessons since 2010.
What are your COVID procedures?
I am resuming in-person lessons based on student preference, disinfecting the piano between lessons. I ask that anyone entering our home wears a mask, regardless of vaccination status, as we have young children who are not yet vaccinated and are a multigenerational home. Also, if you feel unwell but could still participate in a lesson, please let me know and we can have our lesson over Zoom!
